OSEOperating System Environment

Category: licensing

Microsoft's term for one running instance of Windows — either physical (the bare-metal install) or virtual (a Hyper-V or VMware VM). Server licensing counts OSEs to determine how many copies you can run on a given host.

Windows Server Standard grants 2 OSEs per fully licensed server; Datacenter grants unlimited OSEs.

Example & usage

A Hyper-V host running Windows Server Standard licensed for 16 cores can run the host OS plus 2 VMs (3 OSEs total — the host is one). License the same cores twice and you can run 4 VMs.
