01
Editions
Standard (core sites, search, content management, workflows) and Enterprise (adds Business Intelligence Center, Excel Services, PowerPivot, PerformancePoint, Visio Services, BCS, eDiscovery, advanced records management, Access Services). Enterprise is the right choice for any organisation using SharePoint as a BI or analytics platform.
02
Licensing
Server licence per farm front-end / application / search server plus CALs for every user or device. Standard CAL covers basic collaboration; Enterprise CAL is additive and unlocks BI features. SQL Server licensing for the SharePoint content database is separate — Standard SQL is usually sufficient unless the farm needs Always On Availability Groups for high availability.
03
End-of-life and migration
Extended support ended 14 July 2026. After that, no patches. Migration options: SharePoint Online (M365), SharePoint Server Subscription Edition, or a hybrid farm with selective site migration. The SharePoint Migration Tool (free from Microsoft) handles document libraries, lists and user permissions; custom workflows built on the deprecated SharePoint 2010 Workflow Framework need re-authoring as Power Automate flows.
